So you’ve seen the big shop. After taking a job in Lansing, MI, I rented a townhouse. It didn’t have much room for a shop, so I made due.
The mechanical/laundry room in the basement is 21 feet by 8 1/2 feet. This room houses the furnace, water heater, washer and dryer, and a deep sink. The ceiling may be 8 feet, but the pipes and ducting hang down to 6 feet 10 inches. There won’t be any breaking down of any sheet goods in here. And my 52″ SawStop will NOT be going in here.
I created an 8 foot by 21 inch bench along one wall with some heavy duty shelf brackets and 6 2x4s. This bench holds my Rikon 70-100 12″ Lathe, Performax Drill Press, and Delta 6″ Grinder. I also have a Dremel Work Station and Flex Shaft for the Dremel 4000.
On the opposite wall, I have a half wire rack on wheels. It holds a DeWalt 20V 7 1/4″ Sliding Compound Miter Saw, and a 9″ Performax Bandsaw.
Dust collection is handled with a 16 gallon 6.5 HP Ridgid Wet/Dry Vacuum with a Dust Deputy Deluxe Cyclone Separator. Not exactly my 5HP ClearVue Cyclone, but it does a pretty good job of keeping chips and dust under control.
I may not be making any cabinets in this shop, but I can still be creative. I’ve turned rolling pins, pens, boxes, and spheres down there, to name a few.
